McLaren P1: Nürburgring lap time under 7 minutes
Anyone who wants to conquer the Green Hell in such a time needs an absolutely well-rounded overall package. A lot of power is by no means everything; maximum performance is also and above all required in the more than 150 corners.
And while even today many thoroughly sporty cars struggle with the 8-minute mark formerly defined as the sound barrier, the still young guild of hybrid supercars has succeeded in conquering a mark that until recently was thought to be unattainable: After the Porsche 918 Spyder, the McLaren P1 has apparently also burned a lap time of under seven minutes into the asphalt of the Nordschleife – which corresponds to an average speed of over 178 km/h. This is not attainable even for some race cars.
What is unattainable even for some race cars, the McLaren P1 manages with road tires and quite residual comfort suitable for everyday use. The P1 also completed the route from the McLaren plant in Woking to the Nürburgring not on a trailer, but in normal road traffic. The P1 only becomes a race car at the push of a button: In Race mode, the rear wing rises by three centimeters, the car moves 50 millimeters closer to the asphalt and the suspension becomes 300 percent harder.
Up to 600 kilograms of downforce is possible thanks to the active aerodynamics, but on straights the angle of the rear wing is changed by 29° and drag is reduced for even more acceleration – just like DRS in Formula 1. This is how the McLaren P1 reaches its electronically limited top speed of 330 km/h at the Döttinger Höhe.
