The Corvette Z06 has always been the direct production derivative from racing. The new Z06 is no different. It traces its lifeline directly back to the Corvette C8.R, with which GM has been involved in racing since 2020. Accordingly, the Z06 differs from the normal Stingray in many respects.
The 9.4-centimeter wider track, which of course also brings significantly wider fenders on both axles and creates space for 345 tires on the rear axle, makes for a really bold appearance. At the front, the wheel arches push 30 millimeters further out, at the rear 40 millimeters. This gives the Z06 a total width of 2,025 millimeters. In addition, the side air intakes have grown to supply more air to the new V8. The redesigned front apron in combination with the modified rear apron also strive for more cooling air throughput. At the rear is a two-part spoiler lip, the angle of which can be adjusted. At the front, an additional splitter provides more downforce.
The completely newly developed eight-cylinder engine bears the code LT6 and has a displacement of 5.5 liters. There is no turbocharging. It is freely aspirated and revved up thanks to the flat-plane crankshaft. GM allows a maximum of 8,600 rpm for the eight-valve engine with aluminum block.
Four valves – made of titanium on the intake side – per cylinder and two overhead camshafts per cylinder bank control the gas flow. Forged aluminum pistons and titanium connecting rods reduce the moving masses. A dry sump lubrication system ensures oil supply in all situations.
The bottom line is that the LT6 V8 thus draws a power curve on paper that culminates in 670 SAE hp at 8,400 rpm and a maximum of 623 SAE Nm at 6,300 rpm. Measured according to DIN, the values should therefore be somewhat higher. One worker is responsible for the ideal interaction of all the components in the LT6 engine, and this worker is then also allowed to immortalize himself on a plaque on the V8.
