HS Customs “Under Pressure” Specifications
The real Chevrolet
Alex Short has always loved the classic, clean lines of the 1969 Chevrolet Camaro, and seven years ago he decided to tackle the conversion of a car he found in a local classified ad.
The plan was to build a ’69 Camaro like no other, which was named Under Pressure. The name of the car has a double meaning. The first is simple: a pair of turbochargers that feeds the engine creates the obvious meaning. The second, subtle meaning: the challenge of building a custom ’69 Camaro like no other before it without destroying the timeless lines of the iconic Chevy.
The engine produces 1,225 horsepower and 989 lb-ft of torque with only 11 psi boost pressure, easily eclipsing the targeted performance levels. To maintain a smooth ride, one of Hughes Transmissions’ 4L80E computer-controlled slushboxes relies on a Hughes converter with 2,600 boxes to transfer power to the 9-inch rear of the Ford 9-inch Currie Enterprises. And that’s when the fun began for the HS Customs team. The plan for the rear tires included a Pirellis with a width of 335 cross sections, which required new 2×3-inch frame strips with built-in scrapers to replace the bearings. The tire release also required new wheel hubs and inner trunk linings, while the transmission tunnel was designed with additional clearance for the exhaust in the center and at the exit.
The HS Customs gang spent thousands, no, tens of thousands of hours getting every little detail on this car just right. Speaking of pressure, we can’t imagine how difficult it must be to implement the vision as it exists in the eye of the builder while at the same time meeting the car owner’s requirements.
The CSR2 “Under Pressure”
The 5 yellow star Chevy can fit 128 Fusion parts. So far nothing special. The Chevy should run 7.630s. To sum up, the “Under Pressure” is not one of the fastest cars in Tier 5.
