There are some legendary Japanese tuners, but Kazuhiko “Smoky” Nagata is in a class of his own. At the age of just 16, Nagata started at Toyota as a mechanic. After four years, however, he was kicked out for constantly spending work hours pimping his Toyota Celica.
Soon after, Nagata moved to Trust, a tuning company, where his bosses, finding out he was working on personal projects, preferred to feign ignorance for fear of losing him.
Nagata calls the situation “our secret,” and when he later founded his company, that event inspired his choice of the company name Top Secret. Nagata loves fast cars, and his penchant for burnouts earned him the name “Smoky.”
From his base in Chiba, Nagata became world famous building insanely fast JDM cars for competitions and privateers.
