The Mercedes CLK GTR is one of the most expensive, fastest and rarest classic cars. Wherever a specimen is seen in public, a crowd immediately gathers around it. With a mixture of awe and curiosity, people point at the wheels, grab the rear wing and speculate about technical data. And that is absolutely understandable.
After all, this Mercedes is one of the most spectacular things ever to wear a star on its hood. Incredibly expensive (1.800.000 Dollar), crazy fast (320 km/h) and rarer than the Blue Mauritius (built 25 times). Viewed soberly, the CLK GTR is one of those homologation exotics that seem as out of place on public roads as a Citroën 2CV on the Nürburgring.
Constructed to win races, also manufactured in small numbers as a road version so that it meets the homologation regulations. This is what it has in common with the Lancia Stratos or the Porsche 911 GT1. The latter was one of the Mercedes’ competitors in the newly founded GT1 class of the FIA GT Championship in 1997.
But Porsche had no chance against the twelve-cylinder racer from Affalterbach – home of the then still independent AMG company, which developed and built the car on behalf of Mercdes-Benz. Bernd Schneider dominated the GT1 class in the Mercedes CLK GTR and clearly took the title.
