Honda S2000 specifications

The real S2000

Honda gave itself the S2000 as a birthday present. The company celebrated its 50th in 1998 and presented the guests at the banquet with a sports car of the purest water and in the best tradition of the S 800 from 1966.

The forerunner of the S2000 was the SSM (Sports Study Model) study, which Toyota presented for the first time on October 18, 1995 at the 31st Tokyo Motor Show. The basic concept was essentially the same as the Honda S800 in modern form, i.e. with a longitudinal engine and rear-wheel drive. Like the NSX, this prototype had a self-supporting body. The headlights were placed at grille level and the cockpit was built around the driver.

A center spar to the cockpit side, and a rigid aluminum subframe, increased overall stability considerably. Fitted was a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder DOHC VTEC producing 147 kW (200 hp) and a new electronically controlled sequential five-speed automatic transmission derived from the NSX’s F-matic system. To emphasize the blend of traditional and new in the SSM, the instrument panel had taken the form of a multifunctional LC display. The credit card-style ignition switch was complemented by a push-button starter.

But instead of a bonsai racer, the S2000 was a full-grown car with splendid proportions, dominated by the long flachen hood and passenger cell set far back in front of the short, crisp rear end. Behind the front axle sat an engine as only Honda can manage: The lightweight two-liter four-cylinder revs and revs and revs.

Technical data: R4 cyl.; 4-valve; displacement: 1997cm3; power: 176 kW/240 hp at 8300/min; max. torque: 208 Nm at 7500/min; six-speed gearbox; rear-wheel drive Measured values: acceleration: 0 to 100/120 km/h in 6.7/9.1 s; top speed: 240 km/h; consumption: 11.6 l/100 km
