Honda NSX specifications

The real NSX

With four engines and almost 600 hp, the new Honda NSX attacks the supersport elite. Can the hybrid Japanese follow in the big footsteps of its predecessor and also become a legend?

Ted Klaus had been waiting for this day for a long time. A damn long time, in fact. After all, Honda had been working on a successor to the legendary NSX for ten years. But then the wait was over: In the spring in America and then in late fall in Europe, Honda is back on the left lane and wants to once again upset the pecking order among the supercars. Because just as the first NSX embarrassed Ferrari & Co 25 years ago, so it should once again take the lead in its segment. Just as with the flounder unveiled in 1989, Honda is again relying primarily on high-tech, says Chief Engineer Ted Klaus.

Whereas back then it was the aluminum chassis, the electronic accelerator pedal, or the titanium connecting rods and platinum spark plugs for the 274-hp three-liter V6 engine, this time it’s a hybrid powertrain the likes of which have never been seen before this side of the Porsche 918 or McLaren P1. The 3.5-liter V6 turbo with 500 hp and 559 Newton meters in the driver’s neck alone is joined by a 47-hp electric motor directly on the crankshaft and two others with 36 hp each for each front wheel: Together, that adds up to 581 hp, a cumulative 698 Newton meters and handling that’s out of this world.

Not so much because the NSX certainly doesn’t need three seconds to go from 0 to 100 and easily passes the 300 mark, but because you feel like Senna himself at the wheel, so sharply and at the same time playfully do the individually controlled front wheels pull you around the bend with up to 73 Newton meters each as virtual steering assistance. You don’t even feel the dreaded turbo lag when the rear electric motor fills the supposed pause for thought with up to 148 Newton meters and you take off virtually in real time.
