The real Corvette C8.R
As the C6.R and C7.R racing models, the Chevy Engineers developed the C8 road car and racing car in parallel. So both C8 versions could be presented to the public almost simultaneously.
Since it was possible to start with a white sheet of paper, the suspension points of the chassis are now, for the first time, absolutely identical in the racing car and the road car. In addition Chevrolet worked a lot on details like weight, center of gravity and stiffness.
For 20 years, fans have been particularly fond of the Corvette’s grim V8 sound. The music of the new racer comes from a further developed V8 engine with 5.5 liters displacement. So the rumbling has survived. But the tonality has shifted, because for the first time a flat crankshaft with a 180 degree crankpin offset works in the C8.R. Its output is limited to 500 hp for the 2020 IMSA season in accordance with regulations.
The transmission, however, is completely new. The sequential six-speed Xtrac transmission is much more compact than the current one. A new Diffuser takes up the space gained in the rear of the car. Where the trunk of the Corvette C8 road version is located – in front of the cockpit – the racing version has a large radiator. And where the cooling inlets are located on the street version of the Corvette C8, the racing version has additional headlights.
