250 GTO Specifications
The real Ferrari 250
Ferrari produced the 250 GTO from 1962 to 1964 for homologation in the FIA Group 3 Grand Touring Car category. The Ferrari’s Tipo 168/62 Colombo V12 engine powers the 250 GTO.
The “250” in its name refers to the cubic capacity in cubic centimetres of each of its cylinders; “GTO” stands for Gran Turismo Omologato, Italian for “Grand Touring Homologated”. Ferrari only produced 36 of the 250 GTOs between 1962 and 1964.
When new, the 250 GTO cost $18,000 in the United States, with buyers personally approved by Enzo Ferrari and his North American dealer, Luigi Chinetti. This model has been highly sought after by car collectors ever since, and sales have repeatedly set price records. The current record was set in June 2018, when a 1963 250 GTO was sold in a private sale for $70 million. Without any doubt, the worlds most expensive car.
