Toyota NASCAR Next Gen Camry Specifications
NASCAR’s plans for its seventh-generation race car first landed on the desk of Todd Holbert, senior manager of vehicle design at Toyota’s TRD, nearly three years ago. Since then, Holbert and his team have been working on a car that will change the sport more in one year than it has in the last 50 years combined.
First, the technical specs. The naturally aspirated 5.7-liter V8 engine remains. Toyota will run it in one of two downgrades depending on the track. The lower stage produces 550 horsepower, but for certain routes, the wick can be turned up to 670 horsepower.
There have been rumors that NASCAR may introduce some form of electric assist for its gasoline-powered powertrains as part of an effort to become more environmentally conscious. TRD’s technical director said we won’t see those changes until 2023.
Other major changes include a switch from 15- to 18-inch wheels and a move from a five-bolt configuration to a giant center nut.
The chassis of Toyota’s next race car is still a tubular steel frame, but the body panels are now made of a carbon composite. The underbody is sealed, and the rigid rear axle has been replaced with a new independent rear axle. There is also a much deeper front splitter and a massive diffuser at the rear of the car. These are all changes never before seen on NASCAR race cars.
The car is also symmetrical from left to right – as mandated by the new rules and regulations – so there are no longer massive differences in how the cars will look in profile from either side. The new Camry looks great, but there is still a lot to do before Toyota can call it a real winner.
