The McLaren 720S Spider is the most powerful open-top supercar the British company has offered to date. Like the coupe, the open-top version is powered by a V8 biturbo engine with 720 hp and 770 Newton meters of torque.
In order to be able to offer extreme performance in the convertible super sports car as well, the British have further developed the monocage of the coupe with a carbon fiber structure at its core for the open 720S. Additional reinforcement is not necessary despite the omission of the roof. For better rollover protection of the passengers, carbon fiber structural supports are now integrated in the rear of the so-called Monocage-II-S.
These also form the main mounting points for the roof. These also form the main attachment points for the roof system and seat belts. In terms of powertrain, the McLaren 720S Spider (2019) relies on the four-liter V8 biturbo engine familiar from the coupe, which provides 720 hp and 700 Nm of torque.
As a result, the open super sports car accelerates from a standstill to 100 km/h in 2.9 seconds – exactly the same as the coupe. 200 km/h are reached after 7.9 seconds. The top speed is also coupe-like when conditions permit: Up to 341 km/h is possible with the roof closed, and even with the top down the 720S Spider still manages up to 325 km/h.
