Audi uses production components for the R8 LMS where they make technical and economic sense in racing. Audi builds the V10 engine with a displacement of 5.2 liters and an output of up to 430 kW (585 hp) on the same production line as the production unit. It remains virtually unchanged and sets standards in racing with a service interval of 10,000 kilometers and an overhaul interval of 20,000 kilometers.

The designers only use modified or completely new assemblies if they are necessary in racing due to regulations or if the significantly higher loads in competition require it. For example, the standard ASF chassis is merely adapted, while the new body is made of CFRP. For the wheel suspensions Audi uses pure racing wishbones. The durability of the overall design is demonstrated by its use by customers. Teams active in endurance customer racing have completed over 75,000 kilometers in training and racing with individual Audi R8 LMS chassis in less than three years.

Some comparative figures demonstrate the high aerodynamic efficiency of the race car. Thanks to the fully clad underbody and a conceptually integrated rear diffuser, the engineers were able to reduce the rear wing profile by 25 percent compared with the previous Audi R8 LMS ultra, but the maximum downforce specified by the FIA is still achieved.

In many racing series, the engine output of the Audi R8 LMS is limited to little more than 367 kW (500 hp). Nevertheless, the model achieves better lap times than its predecessor.
