Donkervoort and Bugatti? This comparison is not that far-fetched. At least on the first few meters, the GTO can easily keep up with the usual supercars – even though the five-cylinder engine purchased from Audi produces just 280 kW/380 hp from its 2.5-liter engine in the sharpest version.
But with a power-to-weight ratio of well under 2 kilos per hp, 380 hp and a maximum of 475 Nm are certainly enough to keep up with the leaders. From 0 to 100 km/h in the GTO takes just 2.8 seconds, but a lot of confidence. Because just a hand’s breadth above the asphalt and strapped into a racing cigar, you feel a bit like Evil Kneevel just before he’s shot out of a cannon barrel.
So it doesn’t matter that the Donkervoort can only reach 270 km/h – because before the car runs out of power, even the bravest driver has long since lost his courage.
So that this does not remain a distant dream, Donkervoort kept also with the price determination measure. Sure, list prices between 126,735 and 142,068 euros are damn high for a car that offers less everyday utility than a DAF from the early years. But they’re unusually low for a hand-built sports car that’s rarely seen and accelerates faster than most Ferraris or Lamborghinis.
“But with us, they don’t pay for the legend, just the performance,” Donkervoort is modest. “After all, we are not a famous sports car manufacturer from Italy but just a small carmaker from Holland.”
