The Bugatti EB 110 was the first vehicle of Bugatti Automobili SpA, a company newly founded in 1989, after its founder, the financial broker Romano Artioli, had acquired the rights to the name “Bugatti” in 1987. The technical director of the project was Paolo Stanzani, and the first designs were by Marcello Gandini, who had previously designed the two Lamborghini models Miura and Countach, among others. Announced as the most technically advanced super sports car ever, the EB 110 was presented on September 15, 1991, the 110th birthday of Ettore Bugatti, and was produced from 1992 onwards. This was the first time since 1956 that a vehicle bore the name of the legendary brand.
The EB 110 cost $420.000 including an unusual maintenance contract according to which all parts subject to wear and tear were replaced within three years without additional charge. The standard equipment of the car included an anti-lock braking system, air conditioning, power steering, electrically operated seat back adjustment, a Nakamichi stereo system and an infrared-operated central locking system.
The Bugatti EB 110 is equipped with a 12-cylinder V-engine with five valves per cylinder, controlled by two camshafts per cylinder bank. Four IHI turbochargers with intercooling increase the output of the 3500 cm³ engine. The engine has a cylinder bank angle of 60° and is installed longitudinally in front of the rear axle. Between the engine and the seats is a small trunk with a capacity of 72 liters, for which Bugatti supplied a matching leather suitcase.
The engine of the EB 110 SS produces 450 kW (611 hp) at 8250 rpm and delivers a maximum torque of 650 Nm at 4200 rpm.
