Porsche 959 SC specifications

The real Porsche 959 SC

The Porsche 959 from 1987 was a high-tech icon, desert winner and dream car at the same time – because its technology pointed far into the future.

Even after 30 years, the Weissach model athlete is still an impressive appearance. The soft contours, the wide rear end with the fully integrated wing, the flared fender bolsters, the wheels that were huge for the time. The Porsche 959 still has as many mouths open with amazement today as it did in 1987.

Nowadays the 959 beats almost every modern 911 above the Carrera in terms of performance. But such comparisons are of course unfair, because you have to see them in a temporal context. In other words: against the opponents of the past. The strongest in-house competitor, the 911 Turbo Sport, achieved a top speed of 275 km/h at the time and only scratched the 100 km/h mark after five instead of 3.7 seconds like the 959.

The Ferrari Testarossa even needed 5.3 seconds, at top speed 290 km/h – the 959 managed 315 km/h. And the already aging Lamborghini Countach only managed 5.4 seconds and around 300 km/h in the LP500S version. You can see – the 959 was “King of the Road” in this environment.

But the real opponent came from Maranello in the form of a much sharper weapon. The Ferrari F40 pursued a technically contrary concept and slightly different goals. The Ferrari was primarily about raw power. Its 2.9 liter bi-turbo V8 with 478 hp outperformed the 450 hp 2.85 liter bi-turbo boxer of the 959 and, with 12.2 seconds for the sprint from 0 to 200 km/h, took 1.3 seconds off the significantly heavier Porsche.

The 1988 Porsche 959 SC “003” began its career as a “Comfort” model in Silver Metallic that was originally shipped to Monte Carlo before being sold to Japan, where it ended up in a private museum in Tokyo. In 2016, it was then shipped to the U.S. and had less than 38,200 miles on the clock at that point. However, that was also the real starting point for Bruce Canepa and his technical magic. After being completely disassembled, the Porsche was repainted in this specially mixed color.

As a special touch, the 959 features 18-inch hollow magnesium spokes with Canepa’s own development of a graphite finish designed to look like oxidized magnesium. While presumably only the most profound connoisseurs among Porsche enthusiasts would be able to discover what doesn’t come from Zuffenhausen, there are plenty of surprises lurking beneath the metal skin of this Porsche.

The 2.85-liter six-cylinder inline boxer engine has been completely rebuilt with a BorgWarner supercharger in a parallel twin turbo system with new MoTec engine management – which makes the asphalt glow with an output of 825 hp. For the suspension, the original 959 Sport coilover received an upgrade with custom valve shocks from Penske and coilover titanium springs. This gives this 959 SC a much higher ride quality and improved handling as well. However, we are only scratching the surface here of a masterpiece that took over 4,000 hours of work to take shape.
