Porsche brings back the 935. The new 700-hp Club Sport race car celebrates Porsche’s 70th anniversary. It is vaguely based on the successful 1970s race car nicknamed “Moby Dick.” The new club sports car is based on a current-generation Porsche 911 GT2 RS, but with a single-seat layout and all sorts of modifications for the race track. Porsche sold exactly 77 examples of the new 935 as non-homologated racing machines at a hefty price of over 700,000 euros.
Although as a historical symbol of Porsche’s 70th anniversary, its design is completely modern. It is powered by the same 3.8-liter twin-turbo engine with 700 hp from the 911 GT2 RS, mated to a seven-speed PDK transmission. It features sophisticated electronic systems from Porsche’s road cars, such as PSM stability control, a data logger, and even comfort features like air conditioning. A second passenger seat is available as an option.
The steel and carbon fiber body of the 935 is a glimpse into the past, however, and includes some elements meant to recall other Porsche race cars, such as the LED lights at the rear meant to recall the Le Mans-winning 919 Hybrid, and hubcaps similar to those on the original 935. The side mirrors are from the 911 RSR and the tailpipes are said to be reminiscent of the 908 race car from the 1960s. The interior also features a plywood shift lever and a steering wheel from the 911 GT3 R.
The 935 is not intended for a specific racing series, but as a kind of racing toy for well-heeled Porsche fans.
