The real SSC Tuatara World Record Edition
In 2011, the first announcement was made. A car designed to blow the VMax crown off the spoiler of the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport: The SSC Tuatara. 440 km/h was the full-bodied announcement – and then? It was initially quiet around Shelby Supercars. Then, after almost ten years, came the unveiling of the production-ready hypercar, to be built in an edition of 100.
But now the Tuatara is real. Very real, in fact. With it, SSC North America claims to have set a new speed record, officially giving the Tuatara the title of “fastest production car in the world.” On the Johnny Bohmer Proving Grounds of the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the hypercar reached 286.1 mph (460.4 km/h) in a southerly direction, and 279.7 mph (450.1 km/h) in a northerly direction. The average of both runs is counted; so the new record is 282.9 mph (455.3 km/h).
From the initial design to the finished model, a number of changes have been made to the SSC Tuatara. While a seven-liter biturbo V8 was initially intended to deliver 1,350 hp, SSC has since recognized the downsizing trend and implemented it in the design. Accordingly, the displacement shrank while power increased at the same time. Of course, there was no downgrading to a three-cylinder concept, the V8 biturbo remained set. However, the finished model only draws its power from 5.9 liters of displacement, but delivers up to 1,774 hp (with E85 fuel). If juice with 91 octane is injected, output drops to a still stately 1,369 hp.
This performance is particularly impressive considering that the Tuatara only weighs 1,247 kilograms. Conversely, only 0.7 kilograms of each horsepower have to be moved at maximum power.
