For more than seven years, the SSC Tuatara was talked about like a supercar that almost managed to become a hero. The predecessor of this model was once called the fastest car in the world, but it never made it to the road. That was about to change.
SSC’s second model was introduced in 2011 – the stunning Tuatara. This model was designed by Jason Castriota, whose resume also includes the Ferrari 599 and the Saab Aero-X concept.
At the time, SSC indicated that the car would be powered by a twin-turbocharged 6.9-liter V8 engine producing 1,350 horsepower. The rear-wheel drive car was to have a 7-speed manual transmission. It was also promised to have a top speed of 444 mph. But after the concept was unveiled at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, the company’s funding ran into trouble and it looked like SSC would come to a sad end.
The silence lasted for about seven years, and in 2018 it turned out that rumors of SSC’s death were greatly exaggerated – the company announced that it would begin limited production of the Tuatara, of which 100 vehicles will be launched. The production version will be made of carbon fiber and feature a 5.9-liter engine with 1,350 horsepower. However, the manufacturer claims that the engine can produce up to 1,750 hp on E85 flex fuel.
The drag coefficient will be 0.279, which SSC says is better than any other hypercar. The company’s engineers are also confident that the Tuatara will be able to reach speeds of 300 mph (or 483 km/h).
