A biturbo in-line six, HICAS all-wheel steering and traction-happy all-wheel drive make the ’90s sports car from Japan unique – but not perfect. Meanwhile, the Nissan Skyline BCNR33 GT-R is a youngtimer. And like all youngtimers, it has its weak points. After all: the engine, however, is not one of them – on the contrary.

Twenty-two years ago, Nissan launched the R33-series Skyline, followed two years later by the GT-R model, codenamed BCNR33 – or simply “Godzilla.” It was given the same recipe for success as its predecessor – and also its successor: 2.6-liter six-cylinder with biturbo charging and powerful tuning potential, all-wheel steering and drive.

The recipe was so successful that there is an immense cult following around every single Skyline GT-R, whether R32, R33 or R34. Even the original model – Japan’s first real sports car – from 1969 with a naturally aspirated 160 hp engine is the subject of legends. The movie star from Fast & Furious was stronger: Paul Walker drove a blue BNR34 GT-R with more than 500 hp in the fourth part.

The predecessor BCNR33 is celebrating its 20th birthday this year and has thus made the leap into youngtimer age. The stretched coupe was able to convince us, even if the R33 driven by sport auto did not match the standard condition – but at least Skyline GT-Rs do anyway. Even the voluntary restriction (environmental protection) of power to 280 hp was a lie; most GT-Rs already achieved more than 300 hp without tuning.

With this power, the GT-R R33 sprinted to 100 km/h in five seconds. But it already stopped at 180 km/h – another concession. But the Skyline GT-R was never about longitudinal dynamics anyway; much more important was: How does the coupe tackle demanding curves? With flying colors! According to Nissan, the R33 GT-R circled the Nordschleife in 7:59 minutes, 21 seconds faster than its predecessor.
