Shelby Super Snake Specifications
The real Shelby
To be clear – 800 hp in a muscle car is an extremely good idea. Doubling the power of a Mustang, it’s best it’s done by someone who knows what he is doing. Someone like Shelby.
To turn a standard 5-liter V8 Mustang into a Shelby Super Snake, Shelby installs a Whipple supercharger. Additionally they improve the engine cooling system to match the increased power. A new exhaust system then helps boost peak power to 800 hp and torque to 640 lb ft. To match the engine’s performance, a set of Wilwood calipers with ventilated discs replaces the standard brakes. Shelby replaced the rear driveshafts with Ford Racing items and 20-inch forged wheels with Michelin Pilot supersport tires are added.
There are also some lighter body parts that help to compensate for the extra weight of the compressor, cosmetic changes supplement these. Including a new hood, spoiler, splitter, side skirts and carbon fiber diffuser, as well as Super Snake-specific radiator grilles and strips.
The mechanical changes are much more obvious from the moment you start the V8. It’s loud and the idle is busy and fancy, but unlike the traditional muscle car burble, it’s crisper and more aggressive. The Super Snake’s engine feels good for each of its 800 horsepower. Even on dry tarmac the car has trouble finding traction in the first four gears. It is a stubborn and wild thing.
The Super Snake may be far from being a precision tool, but its suspension does a good job of preventing it from being completely inconsistent on British roads. And yet it is still as unhinged and brazen as you would expect from an 800 horsepower muscle car.
