The real i8
The i8 is a plug-in hybrid sports car that BMW first presented to the public at the IAA 2009. In other words, the beginning of the electric era at BMW. The drive system of the BMW consists of a compact 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine with turbocharger, an electric drive and a lithium-ion battery. In fact, rechargeable like a cordless screwdriver at a conventional household socket.
96 lithium-polymer accumulator cells serve as energy storage. The battery has a usable capacity of 11.6 kWh, which enables a range of about 55 km in purely electrical operation.
The i8 is the world’s first series-production vehicle to feature optional laser driving lights. Laser diodes measure only one tenth of the size of conventional LEDs. Nevertheless, they shine ten times as bright and therefore twice as far.
The combustion engine is located at the rear and drives the rear wheels with a maximum torque of 320 Nm and an output of 170 kW (231 hp). The electric motor with 105 kW (143 hp) and 250 Nm torque directs its power to the front axle. The total output is thus 275 kW (374 hp), which accelerates the vehicle from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.4 s. The electronically controlled top speed is 250 km/h.
